The Founder CEO's Personality Is - More or Less - The Company Culture

Databricks co-founder and CEO Ali Ghodsi gave a frank talk at the Stanford Technology Ventures Program (STVP) about founding a startup with six other co-founders.

His most controversial take based on his own assessment:

The culture of the company is more or less the personality of the CEO.

For example, Microsoft under Bill Gates was different from Microsoft under Steve Ballmer and is different from Microsoft under Satya Nadella now.

The leadership team should try to formalize that personality into culture principles for four reasons

#1 Give people the cheat sheet of how to succeed in your company

#2 Promote people and make them successful

#3 Hire according to culture principles

#4 Manage out according to culture principles

Ali capped his remarks about culture by quoting Ben Horowitz

"What you do is who you are"

Not what you say.

Or what you think.
